Clutch free throw shooting sends Orono boys to quarterfinal win

BANGOR- The Orono Red Riote boys basketball team shot 11-12 from the free throw line in the final 3:40 to secure a 61-50 victory over Mount Desert Island (MDI) in a Maine Principals’ Association class B north quarterfinal game at the Cross Insurance Center on Saturday afternoon.

The teams went back and forth in the first half, with the biggest lead being four in the first 16 minutes of play. MDI held a 29-27 halftime lead. The Red Riots took a lead (36-33) they wouldn’t give back when Imao Woldring made a three pointer 2:45 left in the third quarter.

Orono went 15-18 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter overall. The Red Riots (15-4) will play in a semifinal game on Wednesday night. Woldring led Orono with 13 points, Keenan Collett added 11 points, including 6-8 from the line in the fourth quarter.  Jake Koffman filled up the stat sheet with 11 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Nate Desisto added nine points, four assists, and three steals.  Jackson Coutts recorded eight points and four rebounds, Kam Hines scored six points, while Connor Robertson put in four points.

Riley Swanson led the Trojans with 11 points, Aaron Smurkowski added nine points, while Andrew Phelps scored eight points. MDI finishes the season with a record of 15-5. Orono shot 23-29 from the free throw line, while MDI shot 6-16 from the line,
