Colgate earns weekend split with Maine

Orono- The Colgate Raiders men’s ice hockey team scored 3 goals in a span of a little less than 5 minutes in the third period to help pull away from the Maine Black Bears for a 5-1 victory at Alfond Arena Saturday night.

Darcy Murphy opened the scoring at 17:17 of the opening period on the powerplay on assists from brothers Tyson and Tyler Spink to make it 1-0 Colgate.

Maine tied the game 1-1 on a Dan Renouf goal 3:53 into the middle period but Jake Kulevich scored 1:46 later and the Raiders took total control of the game after that. Third period goals by Mike Borkowski on the powerplay and even strength markers by Evan Peterson and Tyler Spink in a span of just 4 minutes and 46 seconds made it 5-1 and sent most of the Alfond crowd of 3,383 to the exits.

Zac Hamilton got the start in net for Colgate and earned the victory between the pipes with 28 saves. Maine went with Matt Morris after freshman Rob McGovern picked up his first collegiate win on Friday night. Morris finished with 23 saves. Maine outshot the Raiders 29-28 for the game. Colgate was 2 for 3 on the powerplay while Maine was 0 for 5.

Colgate improves to 6-14-1 while Maine falls to 5-12-4 with the loss.  Maine returns to action next Friday and Saturday night at 7 p.m. for a weekend home Hockey East series against UConn. Colgate travels to Union and RPI next weekend for a pair of league games within the ECAC.
