GUILFORD– The basketball teams didn’t score a lot of points, but the most important number of the night was a big one on Friday night. The Piscataquis community high school (PCHS) Pirates girls basketball team defeated Dexter 29-16, on a night $1837 was raised for the Aliza Jean Family Cancer Foundation.
The Pirates outscored Dexter each quarter in the key class C north victory. PCHS led 7-3 after the first quarter, behind four points from Delani Bennett.
The Pirates scored four of the six points in the second quarter as they took an 11-5 lead into halftime at the third annual fill the gym night for the Aliza Jean Family Cancer Foundation.
The Pirates made 7-10 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to secure the victory. Bennett led the Pirates with 11 points, including 5-6 from the free throw line, Erin Speed scored seven points, including 5-8 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter. Jordynne Littlefield scored six points, while Alivia Hunt chipped in with five points. PCHS (9-4) moved up to second in the Maine Principals’ Associatiom class C north standings. The Pirates will travel to Greenville on Saturday afternoon.
Megan Peach led the Tigers with nine points, Kayli Cunningham added four points, while Skyler Theodore scored two points, and Abby Webber made one free throw. Dexter (10-4) will play at Schenck on Monday. Dexter shot 4-11 from the free throw line, while PCHS shot 11-16 from the line.
