BAILEYVILLE- The Highview Christian Academy girls basketball team got into some early foul trouble at Woodland High School on Monday. And when one of their leading scorers, Cassidy Lessner, fouled out early in the fourth quarter in a close game, the Knights found a way to stick together and pull out a tough 30-27 victory over the Class C North Dragons.
Megan McDonald scored 10 points and her sister Kelsea McDonald scored 9 to help HCA of Charleston pick up their 10th win in 14 games this season in their first season in Class D South.
In a rematch of a game played last Monday at Eastern Community College in Bangor in which the Knights won by a point on a last second shot with 8 seconds left, this game look destined for much of the same.
The two teams swapped leads in the opening period but Highview was able to outscore the Dragons 10-6 in the second quarter to take a 13-10 halftime lead.
Highview led by as many as 5 in the second half including the fourth quarter but missed foul shots and a turnover down the stretch allowed the Dragons one more shot to go the length of the floor and hit a three to tie it with 6 seconds left. The shot fell short as HCA applied full court pressure and the Knights escaped with the win.
Woodland (6-8) was led by Jenni Cox with 10 points and Sadie Smith with 7.
Highview returns home to the UMA-Bangor Fitness Center on Wednesday to host Temple Academy at 6:30 p.m. Woodland next faces East Grand/Greater Houlton Christian Academy on the road Wednesday at 5 p.m.
