Another week above .500 last week and I don’t remember when the last time I was below that mark in picking the games. This week I am picking both Maine games and also picking the Beanpot semifinals that takes place Monday evening at the TD Garden. I will in turn pick the winner of that championship game when it comes back around next week.
Last week 2-1-1 Season record 37-13-10
Last week’s results:
Tuesday, January 19th
Quinnipiac 3, Maine 3 tied pick
Friday, January 22nd
Boston University 5, Maine 2 incorrect pick
Saturday, January 23rd
Boston University 6, Maine 1 correct pick
UMass-Lowell 3, Providence 1 correct pick
This week’s games:
Friday, January 29th
Maine (5-15-6, 2-8-2 Hockey East) at UMass (7-14-4, 2-9-4 Hockey East)
Maine looks to make a move up the Hockey East standings as they are only 6 points out of 6th place coming into this weekend’s play and the Minutemen are one of the teams the Bears will have to jump over in order to make that move. Maine played a very good two periods against the top team in the country Quinnipiac last Tuesday night at home but had to settle for a 3-3 tie after having a 3-1 lead after two. Maine then got swept in a home against BU in which they were outscored 11-3. UMass comes in struggling as well as they got beaten at home 8-0 by BC and 6-4 by Vermont.
The pick- No idea what UMass or Maine team will show up. Maine never plays well away from home so I will go with the Minutemen in the first game of the weekend. UMass 2, Maine 1
Saturday, January 30th
Maine at UMass
Maine looks to avoid another two game Hockey East sweep but I just don’t see it in the cards for the Black Bears.
The pick- UMass gets a big Hockey East sweep. UMass 4, Maine 2
Monday, February 1st
#7 Harvard (11-4-3) vs #5 Boston College (16-4-4)
In the first game at the Beanpot we will have two teams in the top 10 doing battle as the Crimson and Eagles meet at the TD Garden. The Eagles come in off a 8-0 win over UMass in which Coach Jerry York earned his 1,000 victory and a 3-3 tie against UConn. Harvard swept Colgate and Cornell on the road. The Crimson are scheduled to host Princeton Friday night as well.
The pick- Hard to pick against the Eagles in this one, as it’s pretty much a home game, and the success BC has had in this tournament. Boston College 4, Harvard 3
Northeastern (9-12-4) vs #9 Boston University (13-7-4)
The Huskies come in as one of the hottest teams in college hockey. After a 0-8-1 start Northeastern has gone on a 9-4-3 run and are unbeaten in 8 straight games most recently sweeping a home and home with Merrimack last weekend. The Terriers also swept a home and home with Maine and also have great success in this tournament over the years.
The pick- Northeastern will keep their unbeaten streak alive and send the Terriers packing and hoping for a Beanpot run another year. Northeastern 3, BU 2 (overtime)
