BANGOR- The goal at the beginning of the season for Head Coach Mike Rowe of the Highview Christian girls basketball team was to make it to the Augusta Civic Center and the high school basketball tournament. With their tickets already punched, the Knights finished off their regular season schedule with a 47-29 Class D South win over Greater Portland Christian Academy at the UMA-Bangor campus Fitness Center on Wednesday evening.
Megan McDonald led the Knights with 12 points while Cassidy Lessner had 11 to go along with 8 rebounds. Highview opened up a 12 point halftime lead by outscoring the visitors 17-6 in the second period and the Lions of GPCA could never recover.
Clarissa Jones scored a game high 19 points for Greater Portland Christian Academy (6-12).
HCA, who went 1-14 last season, will be making the first basketball tournament appearance in the schools existence.
Highview Christian, now 12-6, will be seeded 5th in the Maine Principals’ Association basketball tournament in Class D South. The Knights will face #4 seed Temple Academy, also 12-6, on Tuesday, February 16th at 8:30 a.m. The two teams faced each other twice in the regular season with Temple winning both matchups. Great Portland Christian Academy also makes the tournament as the #8 seed and will face top seed Rangeley (17-1) in the quarterfinals.
