Hermon girls upset MDI

BANGOR- For the second staight year and after two very successful regular seasons, the Mount Desert Trojans girls basketball team is headed home after the quarterfinal round. Emi Higgins scored 15 points as the upset minded #7 Hermon Hawks knocked off #2 MDI  49-39 in a Northern Maine Class B quarterfinal at the Cross Insurance Center Friday evening.

MDI got off to a solid start as Kelsey Shaw scored six of their first 10 points as the Trojans took a 10-7 lead after the opening period. Hermon got a pair of three pointers and eight in the second quarter from Bryanne Crouse to outscore the Trojans 18-8 and take a 25-18 halftime lead.

Hermon extended the lead to as many as 11 in the third quarter and had a 10 point advantage entering the final quarter. MDI scored the first six points of the final eight minutes to cut the Hawks lead down to four. But MDI leading scorer Shaw would foul out with a little less than four minutes remaining and Hermon hit 11-18 from the line in the period and would salt away the quarterfinal victory.

Along with the game high in points, Higgins also had 8 rebounds. Crouse finished with 9 points and Lauren Plissey also had 9 and 7 rebounds. Shaw finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds for MDI while Mariah Hamor had 7 points and Maddy Camage had 6. MDI finishes at 17-2. Hermon overall shot 18-30 from the line and MDI shot 7-10.

Hermon, now 12-8, will move on to a 2:05 semifinal round game on Wednesday afternoon against Presque Isle who defeated John Bapst 51-35 in the opening quarterfinal Friday evening.
