The Husson Eagles and UMaine-Farmington Beavers met on Wednesday afternoon and evening for both teams conference openers at the Winkin Complex.
In the first game, Husson starting pitcher Tommy Burns, who had only pitched six innings coming in, went seven masterful innings to lead the Eagles to the 5-0 win.
Burns (1-0) allowed six hits and one walk while striking out two batters to earn the victory.
JT Whitten had a two run triple to open the scoring in the bottom of the third while Julien Boone, Christian Corneil and Andrew Curran also had runs knocked in.
Nate Pushard (1-1) took the loss going six innings and allowed eight hits, five runs, four earned, one walk and four strikeouts.
In the second game, the Beavers exploded for one huge inning in the top of the sixth getting six runs to pick up the 6-3 win to earn the doubleheader split. It was their first win over Husson since 2011.
Husson had a 2-0 lead on a single by Alex Chapman and a RBI sacrifice fly from Zach Sugar in the second and fifth innings respectively.
In the top of the sixth, the Beavers used a passed ball to get on the scoreboard. Mark Leahy and Jimmy Parks both had RBI singles later in the inning to give the Beavers a 3-2 lead before Parks scored on a wild pitch and Sean Cabaniss knocked an RBI hit to help cap off the big inning to put UMF up 6-2.
Husson got one back in their last at bat on a sacrifice fly RBI by Ryan Rebar to end the scoring. Dan Whitney (1-1) took the loss for Husson on the hill going 5.2 innings, allowing eight hits, six runs, four earned, one strikeout and no walks.
Riley Chickering (2-1) earned the win for UMF (8-3, 1-1) going six innings, allowed nine hits, three earned runs, five walks and one strikeout.
Husson is now 6-6 overall and 1-1 in NAC play. The Eagles will host a non-conference game Thursday evening at 4 p.m. as they welcome the Saint Josephs Monks to town. Husson returns to NAC play on Saturday when they host Thomas College for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. UMF plays a non conference game Thursday at Colby College at 4 p.m.
