Albany tops Maine softball in rubber game to take series

The Albany Great Danes softball team outhit the Maine Black Bears 11-3 and used a three run fifth inning to win the third and final game of the America East series 5-3 at Albany Field Sunday afternoon.

Kristen Niland hit an opposite field homerun, a solo shot and her first of the year, to give the Black Bears a 1-0 lead in the top of the third.

Albany took their first lead of the day in the fourth inning as Donna Conrad and MacKenzie Cleary both had RBI singles to make it 2-1.

Meaghan Royle tied the game for Maine in the fifth with a solo homerun and later in the inning Rachel Carlson scorched an RBI triple down the left field line to give the Bears the lead back at 3-2.

Conrad was back at it in the bottom half of the inning with her second RBI single of the day that made it 3-3. Chelsea Henige would hit an RBI groundout to make it 4-3 Albany before a bases loaded walk to McKenzie Bump made it 5-3 and the Black Bears never threatened after that as Albany improved to 29-12 and 9-1 in America East.

Annie Kennedy (5-4) was tagged with the loss in her one inning of work allowing three runs on five hits. Erin Bogdonavich started the game and allowed one earned run on six hits over three innings. Molly Flowers pitched two scoreless innings without allowing a hit or a run and had three strikeouts.

Maine is now 19-17 overall and 7-4 in conference play. Maine will travel to Yale for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday beginning at 2 p.m.
