Plenty of sports action for all fans took place during the day and night on Sunday. Here is a look at some of the action from a busy day on the diamond and ice.

 

At Fenway Park in Boston, Christian Vazquez greeted Yankee reliever Dellin Betances with a long two run homer over everything in left field in the seventh inning to break a 6-6 tie leading the Red Sox to an 8-7 win and a sweep of the three game series. Dustin Pedroia and Xander Boegarts each had three hits while Travis Shaw also had two hits including a game tying two run homerun for Boston in the fifth inning. Hanley Ramirez chipped in with a two run single. Alex Rodriquez led the Yankees with a two run homer and a two run double. Sterling Castro and Jacoby Ellsbury also had a pair of hits. New York has lost five in a row. David Price (4-0) got the win but allowed six runs over seven innings on eight hits. Craig Kimbrel set down the side in order in the ninth inning with two strikeouts for his eighth save. Ivan Nova (1-1) took the loss in relief for the Yanks after starter Nathan Eovoldi allowed six runs on 10 hits in five innings. The Red Sox now are in first place by one half game over the Baltimore Orioles. Boston (15-10) starts a six game road trip on Tuesday night when they head to Chicago to battle the red hot White Sox. Steven Wright will be opposed by Jose Quintana at 8:10 p.m.

 

At Husson University in Bangor, the Husson Eagles baseball team finished off their regular season conference schedule with a split with New England College. The Pilgrims took the first game 6-4 and Husson won the second by a count of 3-1. Julien Boone and Dan Whitney each had two hits and an RBI in the Eagles game one loss while Steve Hanscom (0-2) took the loss in relief. Sam Huston had two hits including a double and an RBI in the Eagles game two win. Ryan Allender (2-2) got the win on the hill while Austin Smith picked up his first save of the year. Husson will play a non-conference conference home game Tuesday with Colby College at 7 p.m. under the lights at the Winkin Complex. Husson is now 20-19 overall and 15-9 in conference play.

 

The Maine Black Bears baseball team finished off a sweep of the visiting UMass-Lowell Riverhawks on Sunday with a 7-4 win at Mahaney Diamond. Colin Ridley led the way at the plate with three hits including a homerun and two RBI. Lou Della Fera also added a three run homer for the Bears. Eddie Emerson (2-1) got the win in relief while Nick Silva earned his third save of the year. Maine has won four in a row and is 15-17 overall and 5-9 in conference play. Maine will host Colby at 4 p.m. Wednesday in a non league contest before hitting the road for a three game America East series at Albany beginning with a Saturday doubleheader at 12 noon.

 

The Portland Sea Dogs got a two out, two run double from Wendell Rijo on Sunday afternoon to win in dramatic fashion, 7-6 in 10 innings over the Reading Phillies at Hadlock Field. Rijo went 4 for 5 at the plate to help Portland take two of three on the weekend from the Fighting Phils. Simon Mercedes (1-2) earned the win in relief as the Dogs had rallied from down 5-3 in the ninth to send the game to extra innings and fell behind 6-5 in the 10th before the Rijo walkoff double. Portland (8-16) continues the homestand hosting the Binghamton Mets Monday night.

 

The Portland Pirates suffered a tough set back in their decisive Game Five of their first round playoff series with the Hershey Bears in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Sean Collins scored a first period goal and Ryan Stanton scored another goal in the second for the Bears as they took a 2-1 victory, ending the Pirates season. Wayne Simpson scored an early third period goal for Portland but the Pirates came up short in the end. Mike McKenna stopped 21 of 23 shots in the Pirates net as Portland was knocked out in the fifth game of the first round series for a second consecutive season.
