GUILFORD, Maine – A balanced attack led the Dexter Regional High School Tigers to a win over the Piscataquis Community High School Pirates, 17-7, in the final day of regular season play on Wednesday.

Seven different Tigers scored in the six-inning game. Zach White led the way by driving in three runs on three hits and scoring three runs. Cameron Pratt, Jacob Bickford, and Matt Hanscome also scored three runs each for Dexter. Bickford, Hanscome, and Dustin Belanger each had two hits in the victory.

Kobe Pillsbury started on the mound for Dexter. The freshman pitcher hit three straight batters to start the game, but settled in and allowed only one hit through the first four innings. Pillsbury recorded three strikeouts in five innings of work. Pillsbury was replaced by another freshman, Trevor Richards, who closed out the game for the Tigers.

“It’s awesome when you’ve got guys that you’re going to have for three more years that come in and throw strikes and show that they can get it done,” said Dexter head coach, Chad Graffam.

Christian Mumley struck out one while allowing seven hits in four innings for PCHS. Ethan Chadwick replaced Mumley in the fifth, allowing three hits and five walks.

Steve Marden singled and had two RBIs for the Pirates.

Six PCHS seniors were honored before the start of their final game. They end their season with a 2-14 record, with victories over Lee Academy, 8-5, on April 25, and Schenck High School, 18-17, on May 2.

“My seniors did what they’re supposed to do. They’ve stepped up and showed the younger kids how to do it the right way. They’ve been doing it all season long,” said PCHS head coach, Jamie Kane. “I’m awfully proud of the kids. The wins and losses don’t show it, but the way they played – they did it the right way.”

Dexter finishes the season in ninth place with an 8-8 record, and will advance to play eighth-place Orono High School in the preliminary round of Class C North playoffs on Tuesday, June 7. Orono lost to Central High School on Wednesday night, 11-4, to set the matchup.

“It’s always nice to get the bats going. Now the key is to keep them going, and hopefully it continues,” said Graffam. “You’re going to need to hit. You’re going to need to score runs. That takes the pressure off everything.”

Dexter recorded only one hit in a 10-0 shutout loss to Orono on Monday. They also lost to Orono, 7-1, at home on May 4.
