Smith helps Husson Football run past Becker

John Smith rushed for 183 yards and three touchdowns Saturday as the Husson University Football team won their seventh game in a row and stayed unbeaten in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference, with a 45-14 win over Becker College at Alumni Field in Leicester, Mass.

After falling behind 14-7 after one quarter, the Eagles outscored Becker 24-0 in the second to take a 31-14 halftime lead.

Quarterback Cory Brandon went 16-26 passing, 236 yards, and two touchdowns. Smith had his big day on the strength of 29 carries. Wide receiver Kadeem Edge caught both touchdown passes, as he finished with six receptions for 158 yards, as the Eagles ended up with another big offensive day with 451 yards. The defense was led by Charlie Meli, Rick Orio and last weeks defensive player of the week Ellis Throckmorton, who all had six total tackles. Logan Steward led the secondary with five total tackles and two interceptions. The Eagles forced five turnovers by the Hawks, with three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

Mitchell Driscoll led Becker (2-6, 1-4 ECFC) going 12-31 passing, 193 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Wideout Michael Caban had two receptions for 58 yards and a score, while Dejahn Hawkins hauled in four passes for 46 yards and a touchdown. Joseph Linehan had 11 total tackles to lead the defense.

The Eagles have now outscored their conference opponents by a staggering 213-63 margin in the five league games.

Husson is now 7-1 and 5-0 in the ECFC. The Eagles will host Norwich on Senior Day Saturday at noon at the Winkin Sports Complex. Becker will host Castleton Saturday at 2 p.m.
