Maine Hockey picks up one point in weekend series at Vermont

The University of Maine Mens Hockey team is still winless on the road after a weekend series in Burlington, Vermont against the Vermont Catamounts.

Vermont scored four goals in the second period on Friday night, and cruised to a 6-2 win over the visiting Black Bears.

The Catamounts got goals from four different players, including a pair from Rob Farrar. Maine got a second period goal from Rob Michel, and a third period marker from Patrick Holway.

Rob McGovern was pulled early in the third period and took the loss, and ended up with 18 saves on the 23 shots he faced. Freshman Stephen Mundinger made seven saves in his limited time in goal.

Vermont goaltender Stefano Lekkas made 36 saves on 38 Maine shots to get the win.

Late Saturday afternoon the two teams ended in a 2-2 tie at Gutterson FieldHouse to finish off the weekend Hockey East series.

Maine held a 2-0 lead after two periods. The Bears got second period goals from Brendan Robbins and Patrick Shea 1:05 apart.

But Vermont got a pair of goals in the third period from Tom Forgione, and then Derek Lodermeier about six minutes later to tie the game.

The two teams played a five minute overtime period with the Catamounts supplying most of the pressure, but McGovern and the Bears were able to escape with the tie.

McGovern came up huge with 43 saves on 45 shots for Maine to help the Bears earn a point, while Lekkas made 24 stops on 26 Maine shots for the ‘Cats.

Maine is now 4-7-3 overall and 1-4-1 in Hockey East. Maine is also 0-4-3 this season away from Alfond Arena. Vermont is 7-3-2 and 3-2-1.

Maine plays a single game next weekend as they host Brown University in a non-conference matchup at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland Saturday at 7 p.m.

Vermont plays in the Friendship Four next weekend in Belfast, Ireland. They will face UMass on Friday at 11 a.m. EST and either Quinnipiac or St Lawrence on Saturday at 11 a.m. or 2:30 p.m. EST.
