The University of Maine and Athletic Director Calton Creech announced Saturday that Nick Derba will be the interim baseball head coach for the 2016-17 season.
Derba takes over for Steve Trimper, who is officially taking the position as head baseball coach at Stetson University on Monday, December 19.
Trimper spent 11 seasons as the head coach at Maine, and Derba will enter his fourth season on the staff. Derba played two seasons under Trimper at Manhatten University and made it as far as Triple A with the St Louis Cardinals originazation, before retiring in 2012 to pursue a coaching career. Prior to coming to Maine, Derba served as the hitting and catching coach for the Chatham Anglers in the Cape Cod baseball league.
Following the 2016-17 season, Maine will conduct a national search for the next head baseball coach.
