DEXTER–The Dexter Tigers boys basketball team went on an 11-0 run in the first quarter and made a defensive stand in the final seconds to hold on for a 38-36 win over Piscataquis Community High School (PCHS) on Thursday night.
Jason Campbell gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead, Bryce Gilbert evened things up quickly. Dexter (4-1) followed that with an 11-0 run to take a 13-2 lead. PCHS went on a 9-3 run to end the first quarter and cut the deficit to 16-9.
Gilbert scored 10 of his game high 24 points in the second quarter to help the Pirates cut the deficit to 26-21 at halftime.
Gilbert scored all eight of the Pirates points in the third quarter as they cut the deficit to 32-29 with eight minutes remaining. In the fourth quarter, Zach White made two baskets and Brayden Miller made two free throws, and that was enough for a Tigers team who stepped up the defense in the final minutes. PCHS (2-3) had three opportunities in the final seconds, but couldn’t convert.
Damyan True and Jarrod White scored five points each for the Pirates, while Garrett Kimball put in two points. Gilbert added six rebounds, three steals, and two blocked shots.
Campbell and Miller led the Tigers with 10 points each, White added eight points, while CJ Cooper and William Strauch scored five points each. Miller recorded seven rebounds and three assists. White grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assists.
