Lions tame stumbling Black Bears Monday afternoon

The Columbia University Lions used 50 percent shooting in the second half Monday afternoon, and knocked down 13 three-point shots in the game to dispatch of the Maine Black Bears 98-73 in Mens basketball action at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

Maine (4-11) rallied from a 17 point deficit in the first half of action to cut it to seven, but Columbia (5-7) held a 10 point at advantage at intermission.

Maine got within six to start the second half on a pair of baskets, but the Lions responded with a 7-0 run and would take full control, leading by as many as 27 to pull away for the road win.

Danny Evans led the Black Bears with a career-high 16 points. Evans added five rebounds, an assist, a block, and a steal. Marko Pirovic added 13 points, three rebounds, and two assists, while Wes Myers also chipped in an 10 points, two assists, and two steals. Maine also lost Andrew Fleming during the contest, with what is being described as an ankle injury. His status going forward is unknown.

Mike Petrasek was the game-high scorer with 22 points for Columbia. He also added eight rebounds, two assists and three steals. Mike Smith added 21 points, five assists, and three steals.

Maine turned the ball over 17 times, compared to just eight for Columbia. The Lions had an 18-8 scoring advantage in points off the 17 Black Bear miscues.

Maine will look to break a five game losing streak when they open the America East Conference schedule Thursday night at home when they welcome in Vermont for a 7 p.m. tip.
