BU Hockey storms past UMaine with third period outburst

The #3 Boston University Terriers scored three third period goals to defeat the Maine Black Bears 4-1 in Hockey East action at Agannis Arena in Boston Friday night in front of 4,888 fans.

Maine did strike first in the opening stanza, as Blaine Byron connected on the powerplay on assists from Cam Brown and Nolan Vesey at 18:44 to make it 1-0.

That lead would hold until there was just 1:32 left in the second period, when BU tied it on a goal from Clayton Keller.

The Terriers exploded in the third, scoring three goals in a span of less than three minutes. BU got the eventual game winner when BoBo Carpenter slapped home a perfect cross ice pass from Dante Fabbro in the left circle with 7:50 left in the third period on the powerplay to make it 2-1. Jordan Greenway scored on the powerplay 1:50 later to make it 3-1, and Nikolas Olsson finished off the outburst 1:08 later.

Maine was outshot by a 41-14 margin in the game. Rob McGovern made 37 saves in net for the Bears. Jake Oettinger made 13 saves to earn the win for the Terriers. Maine was 1-3 on the powerplay, while BU was 2-7.

Maine drops to 0-8-3 on the road this season. The Black Bears are now 8-12-3 overall and 2-8-1 in Hockey East. BU improves to 15-5-2 and 8-2-2.

The same two teams meet tomorrow night on the back half of the home and home series at the Alfond Arena in Orono. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
