January 26, 2017

CORINTH, Maine- The Foxcroft Academy boys basketball team came to Central High School Thursday night hoping to break a five game losing streak, and pick up some valuable heal points in the Class B North standings against the Red Devils.

For the first half of the game, it looked as if the Ponies had a real good chance of that. Foxcroft led 17-16 at the half.

Central picked up the defensive intensity and their offense as well, to outscore FA 40-21 in the second half, to pick up the 56-38 Class B North win and their 11th win overall on the season (11-3).

Central opened the third quarter on a 14-4 run that included seven points from Caleb Shaw, five from Dylan Gray, and two from Andrew Speed. The Devils turned a 17-16 deficit into a 41-26 lead at the end of three quarters, by outscoring the visitors 25-9.

Central would increase the lead to as many as 24 points in the fourth quarter, and knocked down 9-15 from the foul line in the final eight minutes (17-23 in the game) to salt away the victory.

Shaw led Central with 20 points (13 in second half), four rebounds, and two assists. Gray had 10 points, six rebounds, and a blocked shot. Ethan Mailman also chipped in 10 points and three rebounds.

For Foxcroft (2-12), Hyatt Smith has 12 points (10 in first half), and four rebounds. Drew Dankert had nine points (all from three point range) and also had four rebounds. The Ponies dropped their sixth straight game. Foxcroft shot just four foul shots, making two of them.

Central returns to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they visit John Bapst at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. Foxcroft will host Dexter Monday at 7 p.m.
