Two teams that the University of Maine womens basketball team competed against as part of their 2016-17 non-conference schedule, are now headed to Dallas, Texas for this years womens basketball Final Four.
Mississippi State (33-4), advanced to their first ever Final Four by defeating Baylor 94-85 in Sundays regional final in overtime. Mississippi State came to Bangor and defeated Maine back on November 12th 87-43 to win the Tipoff tournament title. The Bulldogs now have to face Connecticut (36-0), winners of 111 consecutive games on Friday at 9 p.m. UConn is the four time defending champions.
South Carolina (31-4), led by former Connecticut standout player Dawn Staley, will be bringing the Gamecocks to the Final Four for the second time in three seasons. South Carolina defeated Florida State 71-64 Monday night to capture the regional title. South Carolina defeated the visiting Maine Black Bears 79-42 on November 21st on their home court as part of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Challenge. South Carolina faces off with Stanford (32-5) on Friday in Dallas at 6:30 p.m. The Cardinal of Stanford are making their 13th appearance all time in the Final Four.
The two semifinal winners will then face off for the National Championship on Sunday, April 2nd at 6 p.m.
