Red Sox score early and earn win in series opener against Cubs

The Boston Red Sox scored five runs in the first inning and held on for a 5-4 win over the Chicago Cubs on Friday night at Fenway Park.

All nine players in the Red Sox lineup had at least one hit. Hanley Ramirez, Christian Vazquez, Marco Hernandez, and Dustin Pedroia had two hits each. Andrew Benintendi smashed a first inning home run to get the scoring started for the Red Sox.

Drew Pomeranz allowed two runs on six hits and two walks to earn the victory. He struck out seven.

Fernando Abad recorded two big strikeouts in the eighth inning. Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the ninth inning.
