Sox fall in extra innings despite Sale tying major league record

May 20, 2017

Chris Sale tied a major league record by striking out at least 10 in his eighth consecutive start. That wasn’t enough as the Boston Red Sox fell 3-2 in 10 innings to the Oakland Athletics on Friday night.

Mitch Moreland smacked a two run home run in the fourth inning to give the Red Sox a 2-0 lead. That would be it for the offense.

Sale allowed two runs on seven hits. He didn’t issue a walk and struck out 10. Sale tied a record shared by Pedro Martinez (1999) and Sale (2013). Sale will next take the mound against the red hot Texas Rangers next week.

Andrew Benintendi and Sandy Leon had two hits each for the Red Sox. Heath Hembree gave up the walk off  home run to Mark Canha in the 10th inning.
