Silva pitches gem to keep Maine alive in AE baseball tournament

Nick Silva allowed just three hits and no runs in 8.2 innings pitched Friday night, to lead the Maine baseball team to a 3-0 win over Stony Brook in the America East Tournament at LeLecheur Field in Lowell, Massachusetts.

Silva (2-2) also had 10 strikeouts and nearly went the distance, before allowing two hits in the ninth. Jeff Gelinas picked up his seventh save by striking out the only batter he faced.

Jonathan Bennett had a two run single in the third inning, and Christopher Bec reached on a fielding error to allow another run to score in the seventh to pace the Maine offense. Jeremy Pena had three hits and scored two runs.

Maine will play again at 2:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon in another losers bracket game against the top seeded Binghamton Bearcats. The winner of that game will play the loser of Albany/UMBC at 6 p.m. Albany/UMBC play at 11 a.m.
