Saturday afternoon the University of Maine and Head Coach Joe Harasymiak announced that Pennsylvania native Chris Ferguson had won the starting job as quarterback to start the 2017 football season.
The 6′-4″ 226 pound Ferguson played high school football at Lasalle Academy. Ferguson was part of the team last season but was redshirted.
In a UMaine press release Coach Harasymiak said, “Chris Ferguson will be our starting quarterback. He has demonstrated a full body of work throughout the preseason. We feel that Chris gives us the best opportunity to be successful. We are excited to move forward from this as a team and focusing on UNH”.
Maine and New Hampshire open the regular season with a rare conference opener at UNH on Thursday, August 31 at 7 p.m. This will be the 108th meeting between Maine and UNH on the gridiron. The two teams will also be battling for the Brice-Cowell Musket that goes to the winning team each year, a tradition that began in the late 1940’s.
Maine is coming off a 6-5 campaign in 2016, with a 5-3 conference record. Maine was defeated in the annual rivalry game in Orono last season by UNH 24-21 on the last week of the regular season, that dashed away any hopes of postseason play for the Black Bears.
