UMaine Sports: Field Hockey bounces back, while soccer drops second straight

Maine players try to defend their goal during their non-conference game against Northeastern on Sunday, August 27th.

 

Orono, Maine- Sunday afternoon marked the home opener for the University of Maine Field Hockey team and also the Womens soccer team was in action trying to break a two game winless streak.

On Mahaney Diamond, the Black Bear Womens soccer team was bottled up defensively and fell to the visiting Northeastern Huskies by a score of 3-0.

Carly Wilhelm scored goals at the 27th and 30th minute to give the Huskies a 2-0 halftime lead.

Kayla Cappuzzo would add a goal in the 66th minute that was deflected in by a Maine defender to cap off the scoring.

Northeastern (3-1-0) attempted 17 shots with nine on goal, while Maine had five attempts with only three on goalie Nathalie Nidetch who earned the shutout victory.

Sophomore Annalena Kriebisch stopped six of nine shots in the Maine goal.

Next up for Maine (0-2-1) is a road matchup with Holy Cross Thursday night at 7 p.m.

 

Earlier in the afternoon at the Field Hockey Complex, Maine used a stiff defensive effort to take down visiting Quinnipiac 3-1 to earn their first victory of the season.

Samantha Wagg recorded her first goal of season in the first half to give the Bears a 1-0 halftime advantage. Maine attempted 16 shots in the first 35 minutes, with 10 on goal, while Quinnipiac had no shots attempted.

Ella Mosky made it 2-0 with a goal assisted by Wagg and Libby Riedl 10 minutes into the second half.

Quinnipiac scored on the very first shot that went on goal, as Valerie Perkins cut the lead to 2-1 at the 51st minute.

Riedl wrapped the Maine win with a goal with just 1:34 left to play.

Overall Maine attempted 30 shots, with 17 on goal. Quinnipiac had a total of three attempted shots, all on goal.

Wagg and Riedl both had a goal and an assist, while Brianna Ricker also added an assist on the day.

Senior Emma Cochran earned the win in net for Maine with two saves. York, Maine native Livy Govlini stopped 13 shots in the Quinnipiac net keeping the Bobcats in the game until late. Maine improves to 1-1, while Quinnipiac drops to 1-1.

Maine will host Bryant Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. in a non-conference matchup.
