Husson football crushes Castleton in homecoming game

BANGOR, Me- Junior quarterback Cory Brandon tossed four touchdown passes, and running back John Smith ran for three more Saturday afternoon, as the Husson Eagles cruised to a 49-0 Eastern Collegiate Football Conference win over Castleton at Winkin Complex before 2,163 fans.

Husson (5-1, 3-0 ECFC) is now in sole possession of first place over Castleton in the conference. Brandon threw a pair of touchdowns to Kyree Calli in the first quarter, as the Eagles dominated the first quarter and first half.

Former Cony High School quarterback Mitchell Caron had a rough outing for the Castleton Spartans. Caron was picked off three times all in first half, as the Eagles also blocked a punt and returned a fumble deep into Castleton territory after the Spartans threatened to cut the lead to 14 late in first quarter. Husson scored 21 points in both the first and second quarters for a 42-0 lead at the break, and rested most of the starters in the second half.

Brandon was a very efficient 15-17 passing, 183 yards, and four touchdowns. Smith had TD runs of two and five yards in first half, and then of 38 in third quarter and finished with 95 yards on 16 carries. Kyle Gaudet had six receptions for 99 yards and a score, freshman Aiden Hogan three receptions for 40 yards and a score, and Calli had the two first quarter receptions for 23 yards and the two touchdowns. Antonio Rocha and Elvis Suazo Jr. both had eight tackles to lead the defense, while Jean Gabriel had six tackles, a sack, an interception, and a blocked punt. The Eagles defense recorded three interceptions, a fumble recovery, and the blocked punt in the game and outgained the Spartans in total offense 360-150.

For Castleton (3-3, 2-1), Caron was only 6-19 passing for 56 yards and the three interceptions. Matthew Hasford had 60 yards on 15 carries. Jermaine Coggins had two receptions for 25 yards, while Chris Rice had six tackles to lead the defense.

Husson hits the road for a matchup with Gallaudet next Saturday at 1 p.m.
