Maine Field Hockey falls in AE quarters, mens hockey tripped up at Lowell

Kriekie van Wyk scored a pair of goals Friday afternoon, including the game winner with three minutes left as the #24 Pacific field hockey team upended #25 Maine 3-2 in the America East quarterfinals at Lowell, Massachusetts.

After falling behind 2-0 at halftime, Libby Riedl scored for Maine at the 40 and 58 minute marks of the second half to tie the score 2-2. But the goal by van Wyk, her 18th of the season sent Pacific (10-8) to the semifinals, ending the season for the Black Bears with an overall record of 12-6.

 

At Tsongas Arena in Lowell Friday night, the UMass-Lowell Riverhawks topped Maine 3-2 in Hockey East action.

Emil Westerlund scored both goals for Maine (2-5, 1-2 Hockey East), as the Bears had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 but couldn’t hold on. Chris Forney had the game winner for Lowell 11:16 into the third period on the powerplay.

Rob McGovern had 24 saves in the loss in the Black Bears cage, while Riverhawks netminder Chris Hernberg made 27 saves for Lowell (4-5, 1-4). Maine was 1-2 on the powerplay, while Lowell was 1-4. The two teams will finish off the two game set Saturday night at 7 p.m.
