Weis sparks Maine womens hockey to overtime win

Freshman Michelle Weis scored 35 seconds into overtime Sunday afternoon, to send the Maine womens ice hockey team to a 4-3 Hockey East win over Connecticut at Alfond Arena.

Maine took a 2-0 lead on a first period goal from Catherine Tufts, and a second period marker from Vendula Pribylova. UConn(4-3-4, 0-2-3 HE), would tie it though on second period goals from Natalie Snodgrass and Savannah Bouzide.

Maine (8-5-1, 3-2-1 Hockey East), retook the lead on a Tereza Vanisova goal 5:20 into the third, only to have Snodgrass tie it 6:11 later with her second of the day on the powerplay. Weis scored the game winner in the extra period on assists from Brooke Stacey and Vanisova. Carly Jackson got the win in the Black Bear net, stopping 22 of 25 shots. Maine went 0-3 on powerplay, while UConn was 1-3.

Maine is now tied for third place in Hockey East, and will return to action at Northeastern next Saturday and Sunday, with puck drop scheduled for 2 p.m. each day.
