Husson basketball: women bounce back, men drop first conference game

For the second straight day the Husson Eagles basketball teams hosted a womens and mens doubleheader at Newman Gym.

In the womens game, Husson was able to bounce back after a Friday loss to Colby Sawyer by defeating New England College 70-53.

With the score tied at 35 at halftime, the Eagles outscored NEC 16-3 in the third, and then cruised to their fifth conference win (5-2). Husson is 6-6 overall.

Kenzie Worcester filled up the stat sheet with 18 points, six rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Sami Ireland added 15 points and nine rebounds. Megan Peach came off the bench to chip in 13 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and three blocks.

New England College (6-5, 3-3), was led by Rene Hudson who had 17 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.

 

In the mens game, Husson suffered their first conference loss 84-82 to the visiting Pilgrims.

Husson (10-3, 7-1 NAC), fell behind by 10 at halftime, and couldn’t quite come all the way back.

DJ Bussey led the Eagles with 21 points. Raheem Anderson had 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Justin Martin added 14 points and 13 rebounds.

New England College (10-4, 6-1), got 16 points and 13 rebounds from Jason Jones. Izaiah Winston-Brooks added 15 points, while Trevor Parker came off bench to chip in 14 points.

Both teams will face in state non-conference rival Bowdoin on Tuesday. The women will travel to Bowdoin and the men will host the Polar Bears, both games at 7 p.m.
