DEXTER –The Central Red Devils went 5-7 from the free throw line in the 4th quarter to secure a big 38-33 win over Dexter at Ed Guiski Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.
The teams stayed within four points of each other in the first half. Central held an 8-6 lead after the first quarter and 18-14 at halftime. Sydney Allen scored eight of her game high 15 points in the first half.
Allen scored six points in the third quarter as the Red Devils outscored the Tigers 11-10. Peyton Grant helped keep Dexter within striking distance with eight points in the quarter.
Central was held to one field goal in the final quarter, but big free throws from Allen, Emily Cohen, and Emily Smith locked down the win. Madi Speed and Cohen scored six points each for the Red Devils. Abi Allen added four points, three assists, and three steals, Emily Smith put in three points, while Rachel Smith and Cassidy Burns chipped in with two points each. Sydney Allen dished out three assists to go along with her game high point total.
The win was needed for the Red Devils (14-1), who came into the game with a hold on the 8th spot in the Maine Principals’ Association class C north standings. The win moved them up to the top four. Central has another big game on Friday when they host Houlton. The Shires handed the Red Devils their only loss of the season.
Grant scored 13 points (11 in the second half) to lead the Tigers. Avery Herrick added six points, five rebounds, and two assists. Becca Batron, Kaitlyn Webber, and Cheyenne Beem put in four points each. Batron pulled down eight rebounds, while Beem had four rebounds and three assists. Danielle Cummings recorded two points and three steals. Dexter (12-2) will host Bangor Christian tomorrow afternoon.
