PCHS girls basketball get big win thanks to clutch free throw shooting

GUIlFORD– Erin Speed went 6-6 from the free throw line in the final 52 seconds to help the Piscataquis Community High School (PCHS) Pirates girls basketball team earn a 46-40 win over Penquis on Thursday night.

The Pirates took their only lead of the first half (3-2) on a Lexi Rowell free throw. Penquis scored the next seven points to make it 9-3. The Patriots held a 11-8 lead after the first quarter and 17-16 at halftime.

PCHS scored the first four points of the second half to take a 20-17 lead. Penquis scored the next four to take the lead back. The Pirates went 6-6 from the free throw line in the third quarter and held a 28-25 advantage heading into the final quarter.

PCHS got the lead up to 11 in the fourth quarter. The Pirates went 12-17 from the free throw line in the final eight minutes, including Speed going 8-11.

Alivia Hunt recorded 14 points, 13 rebounds, and three steals to lead the Pirates. Speed recorded 11 points (11-15 FT), eight assists, four rebounds, and two steals. Rowell added 11 points, six rebounds, and two assists. Bailey Lemieux put in eight points, while Meagan Lemieux chipped in with two. PCHS (12-4) will travel to EMCC and face Bangor Christian on Saturday afternoon.

Sydney Fowles led the Patriots with 13 points, 18 rebounds, three steals, and three blocks. Camryn Rolfe added eight points (all in the fourth quarter), four steals, and two assists. Katelyn Bolstridge and Lexi Goddard put in seven points each. Goddard also had four rebounds and four steals. Megan Valvo chipped in with five points. Penquis (7-9) will travel to Central on Monday.
