Southern Aroostook wins first girls basketball state championship since 1995

March 3, 2018

AUGUSTA- Not many freshmen get a chance to lead their team to a state title. That was what Kacy Daggett did on Saturday afternoon at the Augusta Civic Center.

Daggett led a balanced Southern Aroostook attack in a 54-37 win over Vinalhaven in the Maine Principals’ Association class D girls basketball state championship game.

Daggett’s mother was part of the Warriors last state title winning team in 1995.

Daggett said, “I’ve always wanted this since I was a little kid and I finally got it and it’s amazing.”

The game was tied at 33 late in the third quarter. That is when the Warriors stepped on the gas and went on a 21-4 run to end the game including a 17-0 run to put the game away.

Southern Aroostook (20-2) out rebounded the Vikings 46-32. Daggett and Kylie Vining pulled down 11 rebounds each. Kassidy Mathers grabbed nine while Sydney Brewer had eight.

Daggett and Brewer put in 12 points each, while Mathers had 11 and Vining 10. Daggett dominated inside with five blocks, three steals, and three assists.

The Warriors knew they needed to focus on Gilleyanne Davis-Oakes. Vinalhaven won the 2017 state championship behind Davis-Oakes.

Daggett said “she (Davis-Oakes) is very good and we had to really keep her out of the paint and block her cuts because she cuts a lot and box out because she’s a good offensive rebounder and my help side helped me a lot”

Davis-Oakes put in a game high 17 points for the Vikings. She also recorded 14 rebounds, seven blocks, and two steals. Ashlyn Littlefield added eight points. Vinalhaven finishes the season with a 21-1 record.
