UMD finishes off sweep of Maine

October 20, 2018

The #3 University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs finished off a two game non-conference sweep over Maine Saturday night with a 3-2 win at Amsoil Arena in Duluth, Minnesota.

After getting blitzed in an 8-2 loss Friday night, the Bears played much better. A powerplay goal by Riley Tufte, and second period goals by Noah Cates and Cole Koepke put UMD up 3-0. Maine (2-2) got one back though when Rob Michel ripped one from the point on the powerplay with 2:21 left in the second to cut the deficit to 3-1.

The visitors made things real interesting when freshman Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup scored 4:45 into the third to make it a one goal game. Neither team however could come up with anymore offense, as the Bulldogs held on for the win improving to 4-1-1.

Jeremy Swayman made 41 saves in the Black Bear goal, as Maine was thoroughly outshot again 44-20. Hunter Shepard made 18 saves to pick up the win for UMD. Total shots over the two game series were 90-38 Duluth. Maine was 1-3 on the powerplay, while UMD was 1-5.

Maine stays on the road next weekend when they travel to Connecticut to battle the UConn Huskies for a two game Hockey East series Friday and Saturday. Game time is 7:05 pm Friday, and a rare 3:05 pm start Saturday.
