Penquis girls soccer advances to Northern Maine final

October 26, 2018

A day after knocking off top seeded and previously unbeaten Dexter in the quarterfinals, the #9 seeded Penquis Valley Patriots continued their run by knocking off #4 Central 1-0 at Husson University on Friday afternoon, in a Maine Principals’ Association Class C girls soccer Northern Maine semifinal game.

Both teams had good chances, especially in the second half. Centrals Javona Philbrick put one on net that was blocked, but found the right foot of Alyse Campbell on the rebound, who got all of the shot but put it up over the net. Penquis earlier in the half also had a great shot, as Cymera Robshaw broke in on Central goalie Rachael Smith. Smith came out to cut off the angle and deflected the attempt that just skidded wide of the net.

Robshaw though got redemption as she broke though the Devils defense later, and put a hard low shot on Smith that found the back of the net with just 6:21 left in the game to give the Patriots the upset victory. Smith ended with five saves on six shots, while Penquis goalie Katelyn Bolstridge stopped all three shots she faced. Penquis, now 8-7-2, had allowed 68 goals in its previous 15 games and now has back to back shutouts over Dexter and Central. The Red Devils finish up at 9-5-2.

Penquis will hit the road to face either Fort Kent or Houlton for the Northern Maine Title next Wednesday.
