The #15 ranked Maine Field Hockey team got a hat trick from Samantha Wagg Saturday afternoon, to help defeat the top seed in the West and #22 Stanford Cardinal 3-0 in Palo Alto, California at Varsity Field in the America East semfinals.
With the win Maine advances to the America East Championship game to be played Sunday afternoon against Albany at 3 pm Eastern Time. Wagg got the scoring started at 26:30 of the first half on assists from Emily Hindle and Riley Field. Just 3:23 later, Wagg deflected in a shot towards net unassisted to double the lead. 25 seconds into the second half on a penalty stroke Wagg finished off the hat trick. Mia Borley made eight saves in the Maine cage for the shutout victory. Stanford finishes their season at 14-6. The Black Bears are now 16-4.
Maine and Albany will meet for the title Sunday, and it will be the third meeting of the season between the two teams. The Black Bears won 2-1 in double overtime over the Great Danes at home on September 30, before losing a 1-0 decision at Albany on October 19. Albany won their semifinal 4-3 over Pacific Saturday.
