Mariota, Titans defense dismantle Patriots

November 11, 2018

Marcus Mariota threw for a pair of touchdowns, and Derrick Henry ran for two more Sunday afternoon as the Tennessee Titans ended the New England Patriots six game win streak with a convincing 34-10 win at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee.

Tennessee (5-4) pressured quarterback Tom Brady all day long, forcing him into 20 incompletions, no touchdown passes, and sacking him three times. Darius Jennings began the game with a 58 yard kickoff return that led to an opening touchdown, and the Titans built a 17-3 first quarter lead. New England (7-3) got within a score near the end of the first on a James Develin short touchdown run, but that was answered by a Henry short score in the second to extend the lead back to 14 at 24-10 at the half.

The Patriots could never get back into the game after that, as Ryan Succop hit a third quarter field goal and Henry scored his second TD in the fourth on a direct snap to him from 10 yards out. Brady was taken out of the game after the last Titans score and Brian Hoyer finished it out under center. Brady finished 21-41 for 254 yards. Sony Michel returned and carried 11 times for 31 yards. Julian Edelman had nine catches for 104 yards, before leaving late with an ankle injury. Josh Gordon also caught four passes for 81 yards. Once again Rob Gronkowski didn’t play. Kyle Van Noy had 12 total tackles to lead the defense.

Mariota went 16-24, 228 yards, and two touchdowns. Henry had 11 carries, 58 yards, and the two scores. Former Patriot Dion Lewis added 20 carries for 57 yards. Cory Davis led the Titans receiving score with seven catches, 125 yards, and a touchdown. Wesley Woodyard led the Tennessee defense with 10 total tackles and 1.5 sacks. The Titans outgained the Patriots in total yardage 385-184, including 150-40 in the rushing game.

New England has their bye next week, and will return to action on Sunday, November 25 when they travel to New York to battle the Jets at 1 pm.
