Bad loss for Celtics, Bruins topped in overtime

November 21, 2018

On the night before Thanksgiving, the Boston Celtics were at home hoping to get things turned around against a bad Knicks team, while the Boston Bruins were on the road in Detroit to finish off a four game roadtrip.

At TD Garden in Boston, the Celtics problems continued as Trey Burke scored 29 points off the bench to lead the New York Knicks to a 117-109 win.

New York (5-14) shot nearly 50 percent from the floor overall, and shot 50 percent from the three point line (15-30) in the win where they lead by as many as 26 points. Down 21 in the fourth, Boston (9-9) got within three late on a Jaylen Brown free throw with 34 seconds left, but Burke knocked in a step back three pointer over Jayson Tatum with 12 seconds remaining to ice it. The Celtics are now on a three game losing streak.

Tim Hardaway Jr added 21 for the Knicks, while Noah Vonleh had 16. Kyrie Irving had 21 points, six rebounds, 13 assists, and three steals for the Celts. Marcus Morris had 21 points and eight rebounds. Al Horford and Gordon Hayward also contributed 19 points each, while Jaylen Brown had 11. Boston is at Atlanta Friday night at 7:30.

At Little Ceasars Arena in Detroit, the Boston Bruins picked up a road point but Detroit got the extra point when Andreas Athanasiou scored his second of the night in overtime for the 3-2 win.

Boston (11-6-4) had the lead twice and both times Detroit answered. Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson put the Bruins up 1-0 with his second of the year at 4:08 of the middle period. 5:40 later, Tyler Bertuzzi tied it up 1-1 when he got the Red Wings on the board. Chris Wagner then also got his second goal of the season for Boston to make it 2-1 at the 6:45 mark of the third period. Anthanasiou scored his first of the night just 2:14 later on a Gustav Nyquist assist to tie it up 2-2. Anthanasiou scored the game winner at 49 seconds of overtime when he picked up a loose puck just above the faceoff circles, that couldn’t be gathered in by Torey Krug or Brad Marchand, and was fired into the upper corner of the net stick side on Bruins goalie Tuuka Rask.

Rask stopped 24 of 27 shots in the overtime loss, while the Wings Jimmy Howard stopped 33 in the win. Boston was 0-1 on the powerplay, while Detroit didn’t have any powerplay opportunities. The Red Wings are now 10-9-2. Boston heads back home to host Pittsburgh Friday night at 7:30.
