Both the Maine men and women’s ice hockey teams hosted non-conference games on Saturday at the Alfond Arena, as the men tried to avoid a sweep against Quinnipiac and the women opened a two game series with Dartmouth.
In the men’s contest Saturday night, the #10 Quinnipiac Bobcats got a goal in the second and third period and Keith Petruzzelli stopped all 23 shots he faced, as QU took a 2-0 win over Maine and a sweep of the two game weekend series.
Zach Metsa scored the first of the night at 9:39 of the second period to make it 1-0. Maine (4-7-1) had a great chance beginning the third period when Eduards Tralmaks busted in on goal, but was stopped by Petruzzelli and Ethan de Jong buried a goal on the other end of the ice at 2:09 to make it 2-0 QU. The Bears pulled goalie Jeremy Swayman late, but couldn’t solve Petruzzelli or the Bobcats being outscored 9-2 on the weekend.
Swayman made 17 saves in the loss for Maine. Both teams were 0-4 on the powerplay. Quinnipiac is now 11-2-0. Maine hits the road back into Hockey East play with a two game series next Friday and Saturday at Vermont.
Earlier in the day in the women’s contest, Celine Tedenby scored two goals and added an assist to lead Maine to a 4-1 win over Dartmouth.
Test Brecken had given Darmouth (2-6-1) the lead at 6:49 of the first on the powerplay to make it 1-0. Tedenby tied it at 12:30 of the opening stanza, before Tereza Vanisova put Maine up to stay 4:19 into the second. Tedenby scored again at 12:16, before Brittany Kucera finished off the scoring at 7:56 of the third period as the Bears picked up their second win in the past eight games (2-5-1).
Vanisova also recorded an assist on the day for Maine, while Michelle Weis, Vendula Pribylova, and Ida Press had an assist each. Carly Jackson stopped 13 of 14 shots for the win in the Bears goal. Christine Honor played the first 47:56 in goal for the Big Green, allowed four goals on 24 shots. Kayla Wormsbecher made five saves in the final 12:04. Dartmouth was 1-3 on the powerplay, while Maine was 0-2. Black Bears improve to 8-6-1. The teams finish off the two game series Sunday afternoon at 2 pm.
