Watras leads MDI to win over Foxcroft

DOVER-FOXCROFT– Julia Watras did it all in leading MDI to a 52-36 win over Foxcroft Academy in a class B girls basketball game played Wednesday night.

Watras recorded 21 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, three steals, and three blocks to power the Trojans attack.

“We have a deep team that everyone can score,”Watras said. “I think it is important to have different elements to your game.”

Foxcroft held a 10-8 lead at the end of the first half surfer. MDI came out strong in the second quarter outscoring the Ponies 16-7. The Trojans jumped out quick in the second half behind the hot shooting of Watras. She scored nine points in the third quarter. Foxcroft did battle back to cut the deficit to 29-28 with just over two minutes left in the quarter. After a talk from their coach Brent Barker, the Trojans scored six straight points. MDI outscored Foxcroft 17-7 in the final quarter.

The Trojans turned up the pressure and forced 21 Foxcroft turnovers, including 14 in the first half.

“We love pressing. It builds up our energy,”Watras said. “Once we have better defense it usually helps us on the offensive end too.”

Maddy Candage contributed 13 points, six rebounds, and three steals for the Trojans. MDI (2-0) will travel to Oceanside on Friday night.

Makenzie Beaudry led the Ponies with 10 points, 11 rebounds, and three steals. Ainsley Ade recorded seven points and six rebounds. Foxcroft (0-2) will travel to Hermon next Wednesday.
