The Black Bears of Old Town/Orono stayed perfect on the Class B Hockey season with a 2-1 win over the Broncos of Hampden Academy in a Saturday matinee at the Penobscot Ice Arena in Brewer.

Defense ruled the first period as the game went into the first intermission scoreless. A five minute major penalty for boarding on Hampden Academy’s Parker Shawley was called with a minute and a half left in the first.

Hampden killed the first four minutes of the penalty split between the first and second periods. However, Old Town/Orono’s Chase Campbell found the back of the net with a shot past Hampden goalie Evan Thomas to give Old Town/Orono a 1-0 lead.

Old Town/Orono would add the game winner with under a minute to play in the second period. Tyler McCannell got the game winner with assists going to Trent Lick and Sam Henderson to give Old Town/Orono a 2-0 advantage going into the second intermission.

Hampden came out with a man advantage to start the third period with a penalty at the end of the second by Old Town/Orono’s Tanner Evans. Cooper Leland scored his 11th of the season to cut the lead to 2-1 with assists by Peyton Chahley and Alex Briggs.

That was it for scoring in the period and Old Town/Orono held on for the victory to boost their record to 5-0-0 and jump into first place in Class B North. Hampden drops to 3-3-0 and maintains 5th place in Class B North.

Up next, Old Town/Orono travels to Messalonskee on January 5th and Hampden Academy plays at Kennebec on January 2nd.
