Northeastern blanks Maine, sweeps series

January 13, 2019

After getting thoroughly outplayed in a 3-2 loss on Friday night, it was more of the same on Saturday at the Alfond Arena as the #12 Northeastern Huskies completed a men’s Hockey East sweep with a 4-0 shutout of the host Black Bears.

With two straight non-conference wins over Colorado College and Yale, Maine hoped to be riding some momentum getting back into conference play this weekend. But it was not to be. After Northeastern scored three goals in the opening period Friday, they did it again Saturday with three in the second period to bury the Black Bears. Zach Solow, former Bear Liam Pecararo, and Brandon Hawkins also scored a powerplay goal in a span of 4:15 to make it 3-0 Huskies.

Hawkins added another one at the 2:26 mark of the third, his second of the game and third of the weekend. Pecararo also added an assist on the night, and Grant Jozefek added two assists. Cayden Primeau made 33 saves in the shutout win, while Jeremy Swayman made 25 in the loss. Maine was 0-4 on the powerplay, while Northeastern was 1-5.

Maine drops to 7-11-2 overall, 3-5-2 in Hockey East. Northeastern is now 14-4-1, 8-2-1. The Black Bears return to action on Wednesday night when they travel to Kelly Rink at Conte Forum to battle the Boston College Eagles at 7 pm.
