At George Sereyko Memorial gym in Howland on Thursday, Elijah Wood scored 25 points, and Senior Bradon Blish netted a career-high 24, as the Howlers raced past the visiting Pirates from PCHS 89-64.
The pace was frantic from the get go, as Piscataquis Community forced the speed with a full court trapping press. Wood and Blish combined for 22 points in the first frame, as Penobscot Valley took a 30-20 lead. Eben Cooley kept PCHS in striking distance, as he dropped in 8 first quarter points. The second quarter saw PVHS extend their lead at times, only to have PCHS roar back and get within a few baskets. The Howlers went to the break with a 47-39 lead.
In the third quarter, Penobscot Valley limited a lot of good looks for their opponent. The Pirates only scored 1 field goal in the frame, but attacked the hoop hard and knocked down 10 of 11 free throws. The Howlers, who have done a great job of controlling the 3rd quarter all year long, scored 25 points to extend their lead 72-51. PCHS would not give up, and made the home team grind out the victory.
PCHS was led by Cooley’s 18 points, while also getting points from Caleb Crocker (12), Caleb Willis (12), Kobe Gilbert (11), Wayne Haley (7), and Matt Robinson (2). They finish their season at 8-11, and return all but one starter (Cooley).
Along with Wood’s 25 and Blish’s 24, PVHS received scoring contributions from Grand Kidon (11), Zach Mitchell (10), Alex Tash (9), Reece Carter (7), Shane Borrello (2), and Brad McKechnie (1). McKechnie also had 8 assists, while Carter had 8 rebounds and 6 assists. The Howlers improve to 17-2 on the season, and move on to face Houlton at the Cross Center Tuesday night at 7:05.
