Third time a charm for Ellsworth in quarterfinal win over MDI

BANGOR– The saying goes- “it is tough to beat a good team three times”. That proved to be true again at the Cross Insurance Center on Friday night.

The Ellsworth Eagles jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never trailed in a 71-48 win over Mount Desert Island (MDI) in a Maine Principals’ Assocation class B boys basketball quarterfinal contest.

Devin Grindle provided senior leadership with a game high 21 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter. Grindle set the tone with 2 three pointers in the first quarter. Freshman Hunter Curtis filled up the stat sheet with 18 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and two steals. Jackson Curtis put in 13 points and grabbed six rebounds. Darby Berry also finished in double figures with 11 points. Ellsworth (14-6) will play in a class B semifinal game on Wednesday afternoon against Caribou.

Ellsworth shot 20-28 from the free throw line, while the Trojans shot 5-16. MDI out rebounded the Eagles 24-23.

Steven Pierce led the Trojans with 13 points. Eli Parody had 10 points (all in the third quarter). Derek Cullin and Brett Duley had nine points each. MDI finishes the season with a 13-6 record.
