Cook, Huckins help break tourney record leading Blue Devils to convincing QF win

BANGOR, Maine- The Calais Blue Devils knocked down a tourney record best 12 three pointers on Wednesday morning, 11 of those coming from Lauren Cook and Olivia Huckins en route to a 74-42 win over the Madawaska Owls in a Maine Principals’ Association Class C girls quarterfinal basketball game at the Cross Insurance Center.

Madawaska (15-5) held one lead at 2-0 after the first possession, but the Blue Devils over took the lead by as many as 11, and led 21-13 after the opening eight minutes. Calais led by 13 in the second and 35-24 at halftime. After the Owls fell behind by 14 early in the third, a pair of baskets by Jenna Dugal and Brianne Thibeault cut it to 38-28. Calais took full control after that, going on an 18-3 run led by three pointers from Cook and Huckins as well as a three point play by Cook to take a 25 point lead after three quarters. The Blue Devils led by as many as 38 in the final quarter to advance to a Friday semifinal.

Calais (19-1) broke the record in the fourth quarter on a three pointer by Cook. The previous girls team record for one game in the Northern Maine Tournament was 11 held by Skowhegan in 2006. The Blue Devils also previously held the record for one game at the tournament in Class C girls with 9, which they also broke on Wednesday.

Cook finished with 29 points for Calais, including six three pointers. Huckins had 24 points and seven rebounds, with five three pointers. Sophie McVicar also chipped in nine points, two assists, and five steals. Dugal led Madawaska with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Thibeault and Chantal Ackely put in 10 points a piece.

Calais will now advance to play Dexter in a semifinal game Friday at 7:05 pm.
