MDI gets dramatic overtime win over Winslow in class B girls semifinal

BANGOR- The Mount Desert Island (MDI) Trojans have four senior captains on their roster. Each of them stepped up to lift MDI in a 57-51 overtime win over Winslow in a Maine Principals’ Association Class B girls basketball semifinal game played Wednesday night at the Cross Insurance Center.

The biggest shot came when Julia Watras nailed a three pointer to beat the buzzer and send the game to overtime with the score even at 50.

Winslow took an 8-2 lead and the Black Raiders didn’t trail until Hannah Chamberlain made one of her five 3 pointers to give the Trojans a 29-28 lead. MDI led 31-28 at halftime.

The Black Raiders made seven 3 pointers in the first half, including four from Silver Clukey. The teams combined for 19 three pointers. 10 three pointers by Winslow tied a class B record. Presque Isle also had 10 in a 2013 tournament game.

MDI went on an 11-0 run that started in the first half and extended into the second half. Winslow got a three pointer from Weslee Littlefield with 5:30 left in the third quarter. That started a 13-2 run for the Black Raiders.

Winslow held a 47-42 lead with four minutes remaining. The Trojans went on a 5-0 that was capped by a Chamberlain three pointer that evened the score at 47. Bodhi Littlefield gave the Black Raiders the lead back. Meaghan Bernard converted 1-2 from the free throw line that gave Winslow a 50-47 lead with 1:16 remaining. The Black Raiders had opportunities to expand the lead but they went 1-8 from the free throw line down the stretch.

After a timeout, Watras took a pass from Olivia Gray and sent the Trojans to overtime with plenty of momentum. MDI outscored Winslow 7-1 in overtime with Chamberlains fifth 3 pointer being the biggest shot.

Chamberlain led the way for the Trojans with 16 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Maddy Candage had a double double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Watras also had a double double with 13 points and 15 rebounds. Alexis Clarito scored 13 points (3 three pointers), including going 2-2 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter. MDI (18-2) will face Waterville in the class B regional final on Saturday at 2:05 PM.

Clukey scored a game high 20 points for the Black Raiders. Paige Trask added 12 points (4 three pointers), four rebounds, and four steals. Winslow finishes the season with a 13-7 record.
