Wolverines top Royals; to play for gold ball next Saturday

BANGOR, Maine- The fourth seeded Schenck Wolverines put four players in double figures on Saturday, and claimed the Class D North regional title with a 70-47 win over the second seeded Jonesport-Beals Royals in a Maine Principals’ Association boys basketball game played at the Cross Insurance Center.

Schenck (14-7) started the game clicking offensively going up 8-0 and built a 10 point first quarter lead, and after Jonesport-Beals cut it to six Schenck guard Issac Adams hit an off balance shot from 15 feet behind the three point line at the buzzer to build the lead back to 25-16. Adams had 10 first quarter points, while Colby Hannan added nine.

The Wolverines built the lead to 17 in the second, part of an 8-0 run. The Royals got baskets from Kaiden Crowley and Zach Vincent to cut the lead to 38-27 at the half. The lead ballooned to 19 in quarter number three, and Schenck had a comfortable 15 point lead headed to the final eight minutes of play. The Wolverines got 12 points from senior guard Travis Thompson in the fourth, including his 1,000 career point late in the game and the final margin of 23 was the largest lead of the day.

Thompson led the way for Schenck with 20 points, 19 in the second half. Tyrone Davis and Adams both had 15 points, with Davis adding five rebounds. Hannan finished with 12. Alvin Beal led Jonesport-Beals with 15 points. Crowley added 13 points and five rebounds, while Ryan Alley had 11. The Royals finish up with a record of 17-3.

Schenck will play in the Class D state title in Bangor at the Cross Insurance Center next Saturday afternoon at 3:45 pm against South champion Forest Hills. The Wolverines are in the state game for the first time since 2010, when they defeated Richmond.
