Central Maine Community College went on a 23-4 run to end the first quarter and held on for a 85-78 win over Villa Maria in the USCAA women’s division II National championship game played Wednesday afternoon at Uniontown, Pennsylvania.
It is the second national championship in the past three years for the Mustangs. They finished national runner up last season and won the title in 2017.
CMCC had five players finish in double figures. Brooke Reynolds powered the Mustangs attack with 17 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists, and three steals. Kristen Huntress also put in 17 points. Jordyn Reynolds filled up the stat sheet with 14 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks, and three assists. Alex Bessey and Natalie Thurber had 12 and 10 points respectively.
CMCC (28-2) held off a second half flurry from a Villa Maria that came in the top ranked team. Thurber hit a three pointer to give the Mustangs their biggest lead at 63-39 with 2:54 remaining in the third quarter.
Villa Maria went on a 17-0 run to cut the deficit to 63-56 with 9:41 remaining in the fourth quarter. Bessey made a three pointer and the Mustangs went 5-6 from the free throw line down the stretch to help the CMCC team bring another title back to Auburn.
