High School Hockey: Class A state final set, Class B regional finals tonight

March 6, 2019

The high school hockey playoffs are winding down, with the state finals to be played this Saturday at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston. Tuesday night, two Class A teams punched their ticket to state final Saturday, while two more in Class B will do the same Wednesday night.

At the Colisee Tuesday, Saint Dominics Academy got 52 saves in goal from goaltender Gaston Fuska to take down the three time defending regional and state champion Lewiston 4-2. Lucas Pushard had a pair of goals, while Jacob Lewis and Michael Cilley scored a goal each for the 15-4-1 Saints. Kurtis Pelletier had both goals for the top seeded Blue Devils, who finish up at 17-3.

In the other A regional final at the Colisee, the underdog fifth seeded team from Portland/Deering gave the defending regional champs from Biddeford all they could handle. But a goal from Nick McSorley with 8:24 left, sent the Tigers to the state final with a 3-2 win. McSorley had two goals in the game, while Trevor Ouellette scored in the second period to tie it after Biddeford had fallen behind 2-1. Jake Luce had a pair of goals in the middle period for Portland/Deering, who ended their run at 10-11. Biddeford (15-6) will play in the state title game for a second straight year after losing to Lewiston in 2018. The game is at 6 pm Saturday at the Colisee.

Wednesday night two regional champions in Class B will be crowned. In the North, top seed and defending regional and state champion Old Town/Orono (14-5) will host second seed Waterville/Winslow (15-4) at Alfond Arena in Orono at 7 pm. While in the South, top seed Greely (17-2) will play second seed Cape Elizabeth (15-5) at 7 pm at the Colisee, in a rematch of last years regional final won by Greely 3-2. The two winners Wednesday head to Lewiston and the Colisee on Saturday for a 1 pm faceoff for the state title.
