Sea Dogs fall in season opener

 

The Portland Sea Dogs, Double A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, dropped their season opener on Thursday night 4-0 to the Reading Fightin’ Phillies at Hadlock Field before 7,368 fans in Eastern League baseball action.

Reading (1-0) got a run in the third, two in the fourth, and then another single run in the sixth to pick up the win. The Phils used four pitchers to combine for a two hit shutout. Mickey Moniak hit an RBI double, Austin Bossart a two run single, and Arquimedes Gamboa an RBI single for the scoring plays on the night. Ramon Rosso (1-0) went the first five innings on the hill allowing no runs, two hits, two walks, with four strikeouts. Luke Leftwich, Trevor Bettencourt, and Addison Russ combined out of the pen to allow no runs or hits and nine strikeouts over the final four innings of work.

Kyle Hart (0-1) took the loss for the Sea Dogs allowing four runs, nine hits, no walks, but did have 11 strikeouts over six innings. Daniel McGrath, Adam Lau, and Zach Schellenger pitched in relief and didn’t allow any runs or hits over three innings. C.J. Chatham and Brett Netzer had the two Portland hits. Bobby Dalbec, who is the top prospect of the major league club Red Sox, went 0-3 with two strikeouts.

Portland continues a four game opening series with Reading Friday night as Denyi Reyes gets the start for the Sea Dogs on the mound, and Darwinzon Hernandez is expected to start Sunday afternoon. Reyes and Hernandez are both on the Boston 40 man roster. The Sea Dogs roster includes eight of the top 30 Red Sox prospects, that does include Dalbec, Reyes, and Hernandez. Other high prospects include pitchers Tanner Houck, Durbin Feltman, and Schellenger, and infielders Chatham and Netzer.
