Happ, Encarnacion lead Yankees over Red Sox

September 7, 2019

J.A. Happ pitched into the seventh inning not allowing any runs, and Edwin Encarnacion had two hits and three RBI as the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 5-1 on Saturday evening at Fenway Park.

In another bullpen game for Boston, the only offense needed for New York (93-50) was supplied by Gary Sanchez in the fourth inning with a groundrule two run double to right field make it 2-0 off Ryan Weber. Encarnacion followed with his 32nd homer of the season to left center off Colten Brewer. The two run shot extended to a 4-0 lead. Encarnacion added another Yankees run with a ninth inning double to left. Boston (76-66) got their run of the night on a two out solo homer to right center by JD Martinez in the bottom of the ninth off Aroldis Chapman.

A day after Boston used seven pitchers in beating New York Friday night, the Sox would use eight in a second straight bullpen game on Saturday. Weber (2-3) suffered the loss allowing two runs on two hits in just 1/3 of an inning. Five different starters had a hit each in the loss. Happ (12-8) was great in the Yankees win allowing no runs on two hits, with just one walk and seven strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Encarnacion had the two hits and three RBI to lead the way, while Gleybur Torres also had two hits.

Game three of the four game series will be the nationally televised matchup on Sunday night at 8:05 p.m. Boston sends Rick Porcello to the hill, while Masahiro Tanaka will toe the rubber for New York.
