Maine men’s hockey shocks Quinnipiac on road

Eduards Tralmaks scored two goals, Mitch Fossier had four assists, and Jeremy Swayman had 31 saves on Friday night as the University of Maine men’s ice hockey team upset #8 Quinnipiac 4-2 at Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena in Hamden, Connecticut.

Maine (3-1) outshot QU 10-5 in the opening period and would open the scoring on Tralmaks first goal of the night at 8:49 to make it 1-0. Levi Kleiboer assisted on the goal. Just 46 seconds into the second period it was Tralmaks again getting his fifth goal of the early season, assisted by JD Greenway and Fossier to up the lead to a pair at 2-0. The nationally ranked Quinnipiac Bobcats though would bounce back. Just 1:13 after the second Tralmaks marker Joe O’Connor got the hosts on the board to cut it to 2-1. Wyatt Bongiovanni then tied it on the powerplay at 9:06. Tim Doherty sent Maine in the locker room for the second intermission with the lead though scoring his third goal at 11:57 also on the powerplay. Adam Dawe would finish off the scoring on the powerplay at 9:47 of the third period to provide the final difference and give the Black Bears their first road win of the 2019-20 season. The victory was also the first road win over a ranked opponent since 2015, and the first road win over a top 10 team since 2013.

Swayman made several key grade A stops for the win in goal including during the six powerplays for the Bobcats. Fossier was the leader on the night in points as he had a helper on each Black Bear goal. Tralmaks added an assist for three points. Keith Petruzzelli made 14 saves between the pipes in the loss for 2-1 Quinnipiac. Maine was 2-4 on the powerplay, while QU finished 1-6. The two teams finish off the two game series Saturday night with faceoff at 7 p.m.
